Captain Yondu Udonta is a character in Disney-Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. He is portrayed by cast member Michael Rooker.

Yondu is based on the character of the same name from the 1969 team and the character of the same name from the 2008 comics issue. Yondu also alludes to the father from the song "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Arrow Mastery: Yondu controls a Yaka Arrow by whistling. It is controlled by not only his whistling, but from Yondu's prosthetic red fins.
  • Master Thief: Yondu practically can steal everything, one of the reasons why he is still a member of the Ravagers.
  • Master Pilot: Highly skilled pilot, as he was chosen to join Quill and the Guardians in the assault of the Dark Aster and able to land his M-ship and surviving.

Etymology[]

  • Yondu is named after the character of the same name from the 1969 iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Cultural references[]

  • During Yondu's funeral, Yondu and his Yaka Arrow are compared to that of  Michael Knight and KITT, the talking car. (Knight Rider, 1982)

Disney[]

  • When  Peter and Yondu are floating down to safety from their destroyed spacecraft, his adopted son calls him "Mary Poppins", a reference to the character from the film of the same name. (Mary Poppins, 1964).

Goofs[]

  • Even though Peter says that Yondu has been throwing in his face for twenty years of saving him from other Ravagers as a child, Quill was actually living with Yondu and the other guardians for twenty-six years.
